TOP 10 REASONS TO LOVE A BULLDOG
English Bulldogs were ranked the 4th most popular dog breed in 2014 and they have been stealing the hearts of people all over the world since they came to be in the English isles in 1886. They have taken their claim to fame through celebrities such as Adam Sandler (“Meatballâ€), David Beckham (“Cocoâ€), Rob Dyrdek (“Meaty†and “Beefâ€), Miley Cyrus, Pink, Howard Stern, Ozzy Osbourne, and more. You’ve undoubtedly seen them in the movies, in popular internet memes, and happily walking the streets with their owners, but do you know why the English Bulldog breed is so sought after?
While their token under bites and stocky bodies may be the first things to come to mind, there are hundreds of other reasons to fall in love with the English Bulldog. To keep from boring you (or making you have TOO much puppy fever), we’ll stick with our Top 10.
10 Reasons to Love a Bulldog (in no particular order):
1.) Rolls on rolls on rolls: Is there anything more adorable or “awwâ€-inspiring than an English Bulldog puppy?
2.) Medium size, medium energy, BIG hearts: The English Bulldog doesn’t require a whole lot of exercise, making it a great breed for busy lifestyles. Regular walks and the occasional romp around the block will suffice.
3.) Calm, courageous, and friendly: Don’t let their appearance fool you. Their faces may look permanently grumpy, but the English Bulldog is one of the happiest and most amicable breeds out there!
4.) Dignified (but not too dignified):
Case in point…
5.) Far from a literal bully: English Bulldogs are generally very accepting of new people and pets alike!
6.) Loving: If you’re looking for the perfect addition to your family, the English Bulldog is a great pick. One of their most positive characteristics is their ability to quickly form lovable bonds with children.
7.) Lifelong supporters of “Netflix and Chill.†Especially the “chill†part: The English Bulldog can most often be found napping – on the couch, the floor, or wherever they see fit.
8.) Low maintenance: Although, Bulldogs do shed. Because of their smooth, short coats, the English Bulldog doesn’t require a whole lot of grooming. The occasional brush, nail trim, and bubble bath will do! (Just don’t forget to lift and clean the skin folds!)
9.) Healthy: Although, they do tend to have a bad reputation when it comes to health. It is mostly unwarranted. English Bulldogs are generally a very healthy breed, without many of the common ailments of larger-breed dogs. The most common health complaint? Snoring and breathing issues (due to their short-nose and flat faces).
10.) Did we mention their under bites?

With these reasons and more, it’s no wonder the English Bulldog has quickly risen through the ranks of AKC’s most popular breeds. If you’re in the market for a new dog, check your compatibility with the English Bulldog at AKC.org. to see if an English Bulldog is the right fit for you and your family. (Spoiler alert: it most likely is.)
Once you’ve decided that the English Bulldog is your “must have†dog, don’t forget to do your research on reputable breeders! Finding a responsible breeder with a stellar reputation and dogs with great bloodlines is crucial to finding the perfect puppy. Don’t buy your bulldog from just anyone, and be sure to ask questions such as the number and frequency of litters, registrations, breeder membership/affiliations and years of experience, health guarantees, shots distributed, etc. Read testimonials and ask for references and photos of previous/current litters; and if possible, schedule a face-to-face meeting to check for temperament.
